How to identify children with Specific Learning Differences |
The classroom teacher can use this list to identify students early in the Elementary year:
The child who hasn't learned to read or seems to be failing behind in spite of good mental development.
A child who persists in reversing numbers, letters, his name or the letters in his name, or works from right to left.
Some students suddenly decide that they don't like school after all, and the brighter the child, the quicker he is to sense he isn't learning.
Note a child who shows a lack of good clear hand preference.
He / She may struggle with writing, doing "messy" work, show poor motor control, and accomplish work slowly or not at all.
Take note of a child who -
uses brief phrases
enunciates poorly
cannot articulate clearly
cannot always repeat a word after you say it
7. In addition to being a poor reader, the child may not spell well. He may reverse letters, write the whole word backwards, or use all the letters but not in the correct order.
8. If a child has a specific learning difference, he requires another approach to reading, writing and spelling.
