The Student with Auditory Processing Weaknesses

PROBLEM

Does the student respond incorrectly to teacher's questions?

Does he/she appear unable to carry out instructions?

Does he/she have difficulty remaining on task and focusing?

SOLUTION

• Write key words on the board as you speak and provide handouts

• Write clearly allowing sufficient spacing between words

• When speaking, make certain you face your class. Students with auditory problems often read lips in order to see/hear the difference between bl/pl, th/f/v etc.,

• Keep instructions simple and avoid long and complicated directions to students

• Hold up visual reminders or cues eg. "Take out your history book" (hold up book)
