How To Improve Eyesight

by Marsha R. Brooks - Last updated June 12, 2017

So you want to have your 20/20 vision back, but can’t afford or are afraid of Lasik surgery? There are ways you can improve eyesight naturally. The results you will be getting depend on how bad your eyesight is initially and also on how much effort you’re willing to put in. Your eyes have to serve you for your whole life, so it is important to take proper care of them.

Keep your eyes relaxed

Eye strain is one of the main reasons to why your eyesight keeps getting worse. According to Dr. Bates research on how to improve eyesight, astigmatism, nearsightedness, and farsightedness is caused by chronic tension in the eye muscles it leads to changes in the shape and movement of the eyeball.

Chronic stress has become epidemic and you may not even notice how much tension your eyes were under until you’ve dedicated some time to relieve the strain and relax them.

  • The palming exercise is the best way to get rid of muscular tension in your eyes. Do a 10-minute palming session at least once a day and a quick one whenever you feel your eyes are becoming tired.

  • Another way to relieve the strain is eye massage. Close your eyes and gently massage your eyelids from the inner corner of the eyes towards the outer corner using your middle finger.
  • Splashing cold water on your eyes for a minute or two refreshes your eyes and improves their blood circulation.
  • Make sure to get proper sleep in a dark and well-aired room.

When you’re reading or working at a computer, your eyes have to stay focused too close for too long, which is not natural for them. So don’t forget to give your eyes enough breaks: look off into the distance for a minute, relax your eyes by moving them up and down and from side to side, or do a short palming. Also, don’t forget to blink your eyes after every 4 seconds.

Consider using computer glasses to prevent dry eyes, headaches, and eye strain.

Make eye exercises a part of your daily routine

Eye exercises really help you to improve eyesight fast if done frequently. Just keep in mind that you shouldn’t strain your eyes, so keep your eyes relaxed and do a palming exercise before and after each exercise session, also in between the exercises.

Eye Exercise

You can follow some program or a book, or make up your own exercise routine. Check out my article on the most effective eye exercises to get some ideas.

The more time you devote to the exercises, the faster your vision will improve. When I was doing eye exercises for 40 minutes twice a day, my eyesight was getting better literally with every day. However, you can still get remarkable results even if you do a 20-minute session once a day.

I know it can be difficult to stay persistent, so if you happen to miss a day, make sure you don’t quit, but perform some extra exercises the next day.

Pay attention to your posture

Bad posture can lead to many health-related problems, but did you know it has a huge impact on your vision too?

You’ve probably noticed that when you really relax your neck and shoulders, you can see a little better. See, the habit of keeping yourself hunched or leaned forward leads to muscle spasms and strain in your neck and shoulders, so that less blood can flow to your head and eyes, which leaves them without sufficient oxygen and nutrients.

Pay attention to your posture

To improve your eyesight, you should keep your neck and upper back relaxed and perform exercises for improving your posture.

  • massage your neck, shoulders, and the back of your head every day.
  • pay attention to your posture as you sit or stand: don’t lean your head or shoulders forward and keep your spine straight.
  • perform exercises for reducing strain on your neck and shoulders.
  • practicing yoga or Pilates can do wonders for your spine.

A healthy lifestyle

Because your body is a whole, everything that’s good for your overall health benefits your eyes and vision, too.
Take a critical look at your eating habits.

Too much fat and sugar lead to eye strain and clogged vessels, which makes it harder for your eyes to get the oxygen and nutrients they need.

good food

Eat more fruits and vegetables and drink plenty of fluids. It’s also important to have variety in your diet so that you wouldn’t be deficient in any of the important nutrients, take some extra supplements if you think you need them.

Regular sports and stress-reduction also help to improve eyesight.

Train your eyes to see again

Start doing your everyday tasks without your glasses on. If your eyesight is really bad (like mine was) and you can’t even read without your glasses, start doing it today.

You shouldn’t strain your eyes that you do this for only 30 minutes at once or less.

Or you could go for a walk without your glasses or lenses on (preferably not alone) and observe every detail of your surroundings. It said that people who are suffering from nearsightedness, have the habit of looking at the general picture instead of examining the details.

train your eyes

At first, everything will look blurry, but after a while, you’ll notice that your eyes are starting to accommodate to the new tasks they have been given and your eyesight is getting better.

Persistence is the key

Find ways to motivate yourself, always keep the end goal in your mind, have faith in yourself, and the results won’t keep you waiting.

If you keep your eyes free from strain and perform eye exercises regularly, you will definitely see some quick results.

It takes some time to develop new visual habits and improve eyesight, so if you happen to miss a day or two, don’t use it as an excuse to give up, but do some extra exercises the next day.

You’ll find it easy to stay with your program after you see how much your eyesight is improving with each day!
