OLYMPIC SPORTS

Basketball: France cruises past New Zealand
Yann Bonato scored 16 points as France easily mastered New Zealand 76-50 on Sunday to kick off the men's Olympic basketball competition. New Zealand, which qualified for the tournament by winning the Oceania qualifying group since hosts Australia had an automatic place, kept pace with their opponents for the first eight minutes of the game. But the veteran French squad used its speed to reel off a 21-2 point run and build a 15-point lead by half time.

Hockey: The great wall of China
In the upset of the tournament so far, the People's Republic of China defeated this year's Champions Trophy winners the Netherlands 2-1 in the women's preliminary hockey match at the State Hockey Centre on Sunday.

Rowing: Surprises at Sydney International Regatta Centre
No surprises in the sculling events and two wins for Great Britain over fancied Australian crews were the features of the first day of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Rowing Regatta on Sunday. The first major form upset of the day came in the women's coxless pairs where a first place in the heats opened direct passage to Saturday's final.

Triathlon: Canadian runs down the world
Tears of joy rolled down the face of Canadian Simon Whitfield as he stood on the medal dais, singing "Oh Canada", after winning the men's triathlon event at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. "I didn't think I could catch him, but I wanted it so bad ... for all of Canada. To be Olympic champion is all that I wanted."

Weightlifting: Dragneva takes first women's weightlifting gold
Izabela Dragneva of Bulgaria became the first woman's weightlifting champion in Olympic history on Sunday when she won the 48 kilogram category.

Weightlifting: Romania kicked out of Games
The Romanian weightlifting team has been banned from the rest of the Sydney Olympics with immediate effect for doping offences, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) said on Sunday. Under IWF rules, a national federation is automatically banned for one year if three or more of its weightlifters fail doping tests during a calendar year.

Olympic Aid: Ali and Amy help out
Amy Van Dyken, America's swimming sweetheart, donated one of her prized swim caps to Olympic Aid. Champion and boxing legend Muhammad "the Greatest" Ali has signed an Olympic Aid T-shirt to show his support for the only official charity of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

Visit Virtual Sydney: The Spirit of Summertime
Visitors from the Northern Hemisphere may find it strange to celebrate summer in December, but holiday time is the height of warm weather in Australia. Santas frolic on Bondi Beach, yachts race from Sydney to Hobart, and cricket matches abound. Summertime also has its share of uniquely Australian customs — find out how come icebergs lurk by Bondi Beach and why you should slip, slap, and slop before going anywhere.

ATHLETES

Athlete Spotlight: Lenny Krayzelburg
A native of the Ukraine, Lenny Krayzelburg took up swimming at age 5 with the Red Army Club in his home country. He quit training after he moved to the US, but he couldn't deny his love for the sport and began working out with the University of Southern California swim team in 1995. Five years later, Krayzelburg is ready to make his mark in Sydney, starting with the 100m backstroke final on Monday in which he swam the fastest time in the heats. Check back then to see if Krayzelburg captured gold. Click below for more of the Krayzelburg story.

Athlete Spotlight: Jesus Carballo
Jesus Carballo was a borderline contender in the high bar at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. Soon after, he became king of the high bar, and, four years later, he remains the man to beat in the Sydney 2000 Games.

Athlete Spotlight: Jimmy Pedro
US judoka Jimmy Pedro has judo in his blood. The son of two black belts, Pedro combined natural talent and in-house training to launch a stellar career beginning in 1992. Nicknamed Peanut, Pedro picked up the bronze medal at the Atlanta Games in 1996 — this year he wants the gold. Look for reports on how Pedro fares in lightweight competition.

Sporting Technique Infographics: Hockey
The Olympic hockey competition in Sydney will be a test not only of individual skills and athleticism, but of teamwork and tactics as well. Whoever wins in Sydney, it will be the result of four years of hard work. In field hockey the important elements are the field of play, the equipment and the scoring tactics. Hit a short (penalty) corner and score the winning goal!
