Basketball: Women's - Poland impressive in opening match of women's basketball
In a battle of the Olympic Games debutantes, European Champions Poland began their Olympic campaign impressively by defeating New Zealand 75-52 in the opening match of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games basketball at the Dome on Saturday.
Cycling: Women's individual pursuit preview
The fifth discipline to be contested on the track cycling program will be the women's individual pursuit (3,000m). Twelve women from 12 nations will be racing for a place in the semi-final on Sunday night, 17 September. Cycling: Queally wins gold in record time
Cycling: Ballanger takes gold and sets Olympic Record
The first gold medal of Track Cycling at the Sydney 2000 Olympics Games was won by World Champion Felicia Ballanger (FRA) on Saturday, beating Australia's Michelle Ferris and China's Jiang Cuihua.
Cycling: Queally wins gold in record time
Jason Queally (GBR) won the men's one-kilometre time trial gold medal ahead of Stefan Nimke (GER) and Shane Kelly (AUS) with an Olympic record time of 1:01.609 and an average speed of 58.433 kilometres per hour. Queally set the third fastest time splits at the end of his first and second laps and then stormed home with the fastest third lap time split of 46.630 0.064 seconds faster than the third lap split of reigning world champion Arnaud Tournant (FRA).
Diving: Russia and China to defend diving titles
Defending Olympic gold medallists Dmitri Saoutine (RUS) and Fu Mingxia (CHN) headline strong Russian and Chinese teams in the diving competition at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Diving will be held 22-30 September at the Sydney International Aquatic Centre and for the first time will feature four synchronized events - men's and women's 3 metre springboard and 10m platform.
Football: Germany gains semifinal berth
The German women's football team has qualified for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games semifinals with a 2-1 defeat of Brazil in a second round preliminary match Saturday. Birgit Prinz scored twice for Germany, volleying home the first goal in the 33rd minute from just outside the penalty box.
Football: Australia cannot qualify for Quarter finals
Defending Olympic champions Nigeria eliminated Australia from the Sydney 2000 Olympic football tournament. The Australians carried off a two goal comeback to even the score just before half time. The match turned when both skippers were sent off after a 21-man brawl early in the second half. Overall the Australian team have played well and can look forward to the Honduras game and to the World Cup!
Gymnastics: Injuries hit leading teams
Gymnastic gold medals could well go to the last ones standing as a rash of injuries hit some of the main contenders in the final buildup to the start of the Olympic Games.
Gymnastics: Russia takes the lead in subdivision two
Russia, Ukraine and the United States have topped the men's artistic gymnastics competition after the second round of qualifications at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games Saturday.
Gymnastics: Russia, Romania to battle in qualification round
The qualifiers for the women's team final and the starting positions for each artistic gymnast in the all-around and apparatus finals will be determined on Sunday. Russia and Romania will battle for the team title, with both nations having a team comprised of fully fit gymnasts.
Hockey: Argentina defeats Korea in opening match of the Games
A breakaway goal by Jorgelina Rimoldi in the final minutes of play gave Argentina a 3-2 win over Korea in the first of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games women's preliminary hockey matches on Saturday.
Swimming: World champion Chen eliminated in heats
World record holder Chen Yan, the only Chinese world swimming champion who has come to the Sydney Olympic Games, failed to qualify for the final of the women's 400m individual medley on Saturday.
Tennis: Woodies block Indian medal hopes
Australia's famed "Woodies" block the path of India's best medal chance in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Top-seeded Australians Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge were drawn on Friday to meet Indian pair Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes in the second round of the men's tennis doubles.
Athletics (Track & Field): Men's discus preview
Four times world champion Lars Riedel (GER) may just have the edge with major championship experience when the pressure is applied in the Men's discus. Although the 33-year-old has been below form for much of 2000, he is also the defending Olympic Games champion and record-holder.
