Basketball: Classification results for 9th &11th
Cuba claimed ninth position in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games women's basketball competition by beating Canada 65-58 in a classification game at The Dome on Tuesday. New Zealand held on to win the battle to determine who would finish 11th and 12th when it claimed a 72-69 win over Senegal. The New Zealand men's basketball team beat Angola to also finish 11th. Meanwhile ninth place was claimed by Spain who defeated China 84-64.

 

Cycling: Zijlaard wins road gold
Leontien Zijlaard(NED) out-sprinted an elite field in the first of the road cycling events for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. She held an advantage of about three bike lengths over silver medallist Hanka Kupfernagel (GER) and Diana Ziliute (LTU) after 119.7km.

 

Diving: Xiong takes gold
Xiong Ni of China has taken the gold medal in the men's three metre springboard competition at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games on Tuesday.

 

Football: Cameroon and Spain shine through
The Cameroonian's Olympic campaign began ingloriously when they forgot to bring footballs to their first training session. A fortnight later, though, they stand on the verge of an Olympic medal with only Spain in their way.

 

Gymnastics: Two cold pills cost one medal
Romanian gymnast Andreea Raducan was stripped of her artistic all-round Olympic gold medal on Tuesday after testing positive for a banned drug contained in a remedy she took for a cold.

 

Hockey: Australia beats Korea to move on to semi-finals
The Australian men's hockey team booked its semi-final berth on Tuesday, finishing top of Pool A after a 2-1 victory over Korea. Pakistan also won through to the men's Hockey semi-finals by beating reigning Olympic champion the Netherlands 2-0 at the State Hockey Centre on Tuesday.

 

Tennis: Venus heads for double gold
Venus Williams remained on target for two gold medals when she and her sister Serena breezed into the women's doubles final on Tuesday. Venus has already qualified for Wednesday's women's singles final, in which she will face Russia's unseeded Elena Dementieva. Also today, Monica Seles beat Jelena Dokic 6-1 6-4 in only 59 minutes in the bronze medal playoff for the women's singles.

 

Tennis: Haas powers into final
Powerful German Tommy Haas, who considered skipping the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games because of injuries and dismal form, sealed a place in the men's singles final on Tuesday. Haas will now face fifth-seeded Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov, who recorded a 6-4, 6-4 win over Arnaud di Pasquale of France, for the gold medal on Thursday.

Competition was golden today in the Greco-Roman Wrestling Competition on Day 11 of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. See below for the new Olympic Champions.

Olympic Aid: Swimming Sensations get Behind Olympic Aid
Three pool greats have pledged support for Olympic Aid: William Kirby, Australian 400m Freestyle Relay Gold medallist, has shed his neck to knee swimsuit in the name of charity. In addition, Australian Swimming teammate Matt Dunn has donated two signed pairs of his swimming briefs. Thorn in the side of Suzie O'Neill, Misty Hyman has generously donated her signed swimming cap. Having caused an upset in the pool on Thursday night by snatching gold from Australia's Madam Butterfly, Hyman is giving something back to the Australian community.The auctions, hosted by eBay, can be reached from www.olympicaid.com

Athlete Spotlight: Michael Bennett (USA)
Heavyweight contender Michael Bennett can thank boxing for turning around his life. A high-school wrestler and football player, Bennett was convicted of armed robbery and served seven years of a 26-year sentence. In prison, however, he took up boxing, and eventually worked his way up to 1999 world champion. However Felix Savon of Cuba outclassed Bennett inside three rounds on Tuesday.

 

Athlete Spotlight: Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli (France)
Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli won gold in the 1996 Atlanta Games, rounding out the biggest collection of medals and trophies in women's cycling. Since she began competing in 1979, she has won 12 world championships and 37 French national titles while breaking 36 world records. In all, she has won nearly 600 races.
